Elegant small snuff gourds were prestige items in much the same way as snuff boxes were in Europe. Snuff taking was widespread among the Zulu and its use was part of daily ritual in the community. The beautiful deep patina shows the age and frequent handling such personal items would have received.
The gourds were patterned by pressing the bent ends of cut lengths of brass or copper wire into a drying gourd in the appropriate design.
