Snuff taking was a social ritual widely enjoyed by both men and women in southern Africa. Snuff containers could come in many sizes, forms and materials. They were often items of personal prestige and adornment decorating the body, hanging from the waist or arm, attached to cloaks or bags some even hanging from pierced earlobes.
